Be still my heart...

Valentine's Day is fast approaching. I see the pink and red hearts everywhere and it makes me so sad.

Early last Valentine's morning was the day of Maggie's catastrophic event when she stopped breathing and her heart stopped. She never regained consciousness and died the next evening. But Valentine's Day is the day we lost her.

Valentine's Day. A day set aside for love.  I suppose it all makes sense in some macabre way.  Everybody loved Maggie and Maggie loved them right back. She owned any room she entered because people were drawn to her exuberant joy and her obvious love of life.

But the day will be hard for us. I am back there over and over again every time I see the garish decorations - the ones Maggie loved.

We had Valentines all prepared for school. Those chocolate hearts wrapped in red foil from Sees Candies were for all the adults and the little boxes of candy hearts for all the kids. The chocolate hearts are now in the freezer - but I know we will never eat them. The boxes of candy hearts with sayings like "Oh you kid" and "I love you" are up in the cabinet.

A card Maggie and I made for Steve sat on the sideboard in the dining room for months.  It just said "Dad, you're my Superman" and there was a superman sucker next to it. I don't know what happened to the sucker. Last time I saw it it looked very old and faded. The card we still have.

What does one do with things like this? They are so packed with meaning for us. They make us sad and remind us of the worst day of our lives. But we can't throw them away. Not yet anyway. Strange, isn't it?
Valentines is forever changed for me. We still celebrate love, but now it is a day to remember someone we loved so very very much. And miss so terribly.

Where did I leave my heart?

Happy Valentines Day to all.

Maggie went off to school with chocolate hearts for all her friends and teachers. In years past we've done more elaborate valentines, but she is going for the understated and classy approach this year. That and this day sort of sneaked up on us giving us no times to prepare. Oh well. The thought is pure.

We are looking past Valentine's Day and President's Day to Maggie's upcoming 18th Birthday. We are planning a big party and all energy is focused there. Maggie thinks the priorities are just right.

If you mention her birthday she starts waiving her hand in the air. She is actually looking forward to it, which I believe is a first. Maybe she's just looking forward to being 18, so she doesn't have to live by my rules anymore.

For those of you in San Francisco, pay attention to the Tuesday noon whistle/alert today. Instead of the normal air raid sound with the unintelligible instructions you will hear "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" because today is Tony Bennett day and the 50th anniversary of that song being released.

Edit update: 12 noon has come and gone, and no Tony Bennett over the emergency system. Too bad. I plan to sing it from my beck deck for all my neighbors. It's the least I can do for all of them.

Anatomy of a "marriage:

I received the following email from Maggie's teacher about the Valentine's Day festivities at her school. The last picture made me laugh out loud.

So...they had a 'marriage booth' today in the cafeteria and after refusing both Tyre's and Patrick's hand in marriage, Maggie chose Juan as her main man.  There is a hard copy of the picture in the works but in the meantime, David took these on his phone.  We said that they represent the many facets of marriage.  They are pretty funny.
